The Math/Science Expedition (MSE) is an intense, 10-day float trip on the Salmon and Aniak Rivers. 7th-12th grade students and recent graduates are immersed in relevant, experiential, math, and science learning opportunities while developing valuable leadership, employability, and character skills.
Experiences include:
- Working together to set up and breakdown camp each day (navigation, tent set-up/breakdown, preparing meals, filtering water, and cleanup)
- Learning the sounding habitat and the complexity of the river and how it equates to the overall health of the fish
- Measuring the weights and lengths of over 1,000 fish (king salmon, coho salmon, and Dolly Varden) at different stations along the river
- Calculating the mean, median, and mode and fish condition factor of each species at various stations along the river
